Checkmat Vancouver was originally known as Ryan’s MMA for its head coach & successful MMA fighter Adam Ryan. Although we teach all MMA disciplines at Checkmat Vancouver – striking, wrestling, and ground work (BJJ) – we are an affiliate of Brazil’s Checkmat team, which is best known as a Jiu Jitsu organization.
Checkmat was formed in 2008 after disagreements between the Vieira Brothers – three renowned BJJ competitors from Brazil – and the board of their previous team, Brasa. Despite being such a new team, Checkmat quickly started to pick up medals at some of the world’s most prestigious BJJ tournaments, while consistently training quality black belts such as Marcus Almeida “Buchecha”, Antonio Carlos and Joao Assis. Checkmat now has affiliates in more than 16 different countries.
How Checkmat Started
Checkmat was created by brothers Leonardo Vieira and Ricardo Vieira, two elite BJJ competitors who trained under Alliance Jiu-Jitsu – one of the premier BJJ teams in the world. After a series of disagreements between Alliance’s head coach Fabio Gurgel, the brothers were expelled from the team in 2002 alongside many other fighters. This prompted them to form their own team called “Brasa”. However, the brothers felt the new team lacked leadership and direction so they decided to form their own new team, which is how Checkmat came to be in 2008.
