Three of Checkmat’s fighters participated in this weekend’s Battlefield Fight League 53 – David Perron, Victor Dodge, and Gurshan Singh. In the event’s co-main fight, the veteran Perron faced off against Curtis Harriott. Dave was down 3 rounds, and told by long-time coach Adam Ryan that he needed a knockout or submission. He managed to catch Harriot in a heelhook 2:30 minutes into round 4, ending the fight. With this win, Dave extends his recent winning streak to 3. Check out his after-fight interview below.
Two of Checkmat’s fighters – Cole Smith and David Perron – were triumphant at Battlefield Fight League 52 on November 18. Cole “The Cole Train” Smith put his BFL bantamweight belt on the line against Tyler Dolby. Although the bout was originally slated to be the co-main event, an injury caused Chris Anderson to pull out of his fight against Matt Dwyer, making the Bantamweight title fight the new main event.
Cole made short work of his challenger, catching him in an armbar 3:13 minutes into first round, retaining his bantamweight belt. With this win, Cole continues his undefeated record (4-0).
Meanwhile, MMA veteran David “Showtime” Perron (9-7) went up against Mike Dubois (6-3) in a 180 lb bout. Dave submitted his opponent by a guillotine choke at minute 1:29 of the first round.
Checkmat’s very own wrestler-turned-MMA-fighter Arjan Bhullar (7-0 MMA) was triumphant in his heavyweight UFC debut against Brazilian Luis Henrique (10 – 4 MMA) at UFC 215 in Alberta. Arjan took the center of the octagon and pressured his Brazilian opponent from the get go, scoring a knockdown after a heavy right hand and getting a crucial takedown later in the fight. Although Henrique seemed to come out strong in round 3, it wasn’t enough; Arjan won the fight by unanimous decision (29-28, 2 rounds to 1). Arjan is the first Indian fighter to join the UFC and hopes to play a big role in popularizing MMA in India.
On the same day as the UFC event, two more of our fighters took part in Battlefield Fight League 51 at Hardrock Casino in Coquitlam, BC. Checkmat’s Manny Fernandez fell short against Matt Leper in an amateur catchweight bout (160 lb) that saw the two men exchange powerful punches in round 1.
Meanwhile in the main event, Checkmat’s Achilles Estremadura defeated Thomas Patrick in another 160 lb catchweight bout. Achilles dominated all three rounds with striking before getting the knockout in round 3, not letting his jiu-jitsu-oriented opponent take the fight to the ground.

It didn’t take heavy hitting Fivestar Fight League 185 lb Champ, Brendan Kornberger, long to plough through Blackzillian Fighter Nicolae Cury. At the end of the first round, Nicolae was unable to return to his corner after a brutal ground and pound finish by Kornberger. What’s next for this rising 185 lb star?
Congratulations, Brendan! Saving lives as a Firefighter by day, making people wish for death by night.
BFL 39 went down October 17th at the Hard Rock Casino in Coquitlam, and we sent three fighters to battle it out.
Robin Laybourn destroyed his opponent in the first round with ground and pound and eventually sunk in a rear naked choke to finish his opponent, and won the Light Heavyweight BELT. Robin was on fire, and with the support of his family and his team, he was unstoppable. Congratulations, Robin!
Tristan Connelly went to war in the cage and danced toe to toe with a wicked striker. A judge’s decision went to his opponent, but the battle was epic and we’re so super proud of Tristan. He has something that can’t be taught, and with a bit more fine tuning, Tristan will be back in the cage as a deadly force.
Arjan Bhullar, Commonwealth and Olympic Wrestler turned MMA Heavyweight just dominated is opponent in a beautiful display of wrestling, control, ground and pound and eventually a ref stoppage. Arjan holds the BFL Heavyweight title, and we can’t wait to see what he’ll be bringing to the cage in the future. Congratulations, Arjan!
Here’s an interview with your new Heavyweight Champ, Arjan Bhullar:
